The Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (SAYFC) has announced news that the Scottish Government has withdrawn financial support for the organisation.
SAYFC, Scotland’s largest rural youth organisation will lose its annual grant of £66,000 from the Government. The effect of this will be that the association’s annual income will fall by 13%.
This is the first time in nearly 70 years that SAYFC will receive no financial support from Government, impacting on more than 3,500 members across Scotland, including young farmers from the Haddington branch.
East Lothian candidate, Rachael Hamilton has strongly criticised the decision, saying young farmers clubs in East Lothian provide young people with skills and opportunities and deserve to be supported.
East Lothian candidate, Rachael Hamilton said: “It is very short sighted to remove funding for young farmers clubs, particularly at a time when it is increasingly difficult to attract youngsters to a career in farming.
“East Lothian is renowned for its agricultural industry and a very healthy and lively network of young farmers clubs. My concern is that with incomes cut by 13%, some of the clubs will struggle to attract new members.
“As a former member of the young farmer's association I understand the importance of such an organisation to young people living in rural communities.
“I learnt many skills and made lifelong friends which is so important when you live in the countryside. These cuts should be reconsidered to safeguard the future of the SAYFC.”
