Commenting on the Referendum result in East Lothian, Kathryn Smith, Local Leader of Better Together East Lothian said:
‘The people of Scotland have spoken in overwhelming numbers and have chosen unity over division and positive change for the future of our country.
It is particularly pleasing that East Lothian returned the 6th best result in Scotland with 62% voting to retain the Union.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers, from all political organisations and from none, who worked tirelessly to achieve this result. Whether you manned the many street stalls we held, delivered leaflets, foot canvassed, telephone canvassed, stood at the polling station on polling day or helped to get out the vote, your contribution to the campaign is greatly appreciated by me and the Better Together East Lothian group.
There is no doubt that the campaign has been energising but it has also been divisive. Both sides now need to respect the result and move forward in the best interests of Scotland.’
