Craig Hoy MSP at Preston MillCraig Hoy MSP recently visited Preston Mill, near East Linton, to learn more about the National Lottery Open Week and how the National Trust for Scotland is preserving this historic site.

During the visit, Mr Hoy heard about the Trust’s plans to raise around £50,000 to restore one set of mill stones to working condition.

He met with Gordon Stewart and Fraser MacDonald and discussed some of the challenges the team faces in maintaining and running the site, including flooding, vandalism, and the seasonal nature of visitor numbers.

Craig Hoy MSP said: “I had a fascinating visit to Preston Mill. The mill played a role in the popular TV show Outlander, which continues to attract many visitors — some as part of organised tours.

“The team is preparing to launch a campaign to raise £55,000 to bring one of the mill’s grinding stones back into working order. I hope they reach that target, as it would be fantastic to see the mill in operation again. The site is beautifully maintained and makes for a wonderful day out.”

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Preston Mill being part of the National Trust for Scotland’s property portfolio. It was the first industrial property ever gifted to the Trust.

Mr Hoy added: “The mill welcomes around 3,000 visitors each year and took part in this year’s National Lottery Open Week. The event will return next year, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the considerable savings on offer when visiting National Trust for Scotland sites.

“Thanks to the team for hosting me, it was a very informative and enjoyable visit. If you haven’t already been to Preston Mill, I highly recommend it.”
