The Scottish Conservatives’ European Parliamentary candidate has pledged to help a leading Scottish food and drinks industry supplier expand its business abroad.
Dr Ian Duncan visited Haddington-based firm PureMalt Products, where he met with Managing Director Bruce Turner.
Mr Turner told Dr Duncan how his firm are exploring opportunities to grow exports to South Korea, taking advantage of a new Trade Agreement with the EU.
However, he expressed his concern over a lack of clear guidance from the EU as to how current legislation from Brussels can help his firm expand into new markets.
The business exports all over the world and is continually seeking opportunities to find new export destinations.
Dr Duncan welcomed the news of a new EU preferential Trade Agreement with South Korea and vowed if, elected, to support local businesses like PureMalt to ensure they have all the necessary information to hand to find new markets around the world.
Scottish Conservative European Parliamentary candidate, Dr Ian Duncan, said:
“I welcome the news of the recent EU preferential Trade Agreement with South Korea.
“However, if the EU has good news for local businesses then they must ensure they know about it.
“Since the Trade Agreement should have direct benefits for PureMalt, it’s frustrating that Bruce Turner and his team are having to go the extra mile to find out what these benefits actually are.
“The EU has a responsibility to ensure local businesses like PureMalt are fully aware of what direct benefits EU legislation has for them.
“If I am elected, I pledge to stand up for local businesses like Pure Malt and ensure they get all the help they need to take full advantage of these new trade opportunities abroad.”
