On Tuesday this week (10th September) Dunbar Councillor Michael Veitch introduced a public meeting at the Royal MacKintosh Hotel, Dunbar to discuss the town’s High Street. Around 50 people from various community groups were in attendance. The meeting was jointly hosted by East Lothian Council and the Dunbar Trades Association, and was chaired by Angela Leitch, Chief Executive of East Lothian Council.
Introducing the meeting, Cllr Veitch said:
“The purpose of the meeting is to have an open discussion about Dunbar’s High Street. The High Street is the heart of the community, and local people have a real interest in its history, its present condition, and its future development. Speaking as a relatively new councillor, I’m aware that this is a well trod path, and that many discussions, meetings, documents etc. on the subject of Dunbar High Street will have gone before. My hope would be that we can go away with some definite action points and a clearer sense of the vision which the businesses and residents of the High Street itself, as well as others in the town, have for their High Street.”
Following the meeting, Cllr Veitch added:
“I was very encouraged by the high level of interest shown at the meeting. A range of issues were discussed including the Abbey Church, the Corn Exchange, traffic issues and how best to support local businesses and high street residents. I’m especially pleased that some definite action points emerged including more information for businesses on planning issues and the possibility of a resident’s association for the High Street similar to the very successful Shore & Harbour Neighbourhood Group.”
